About NINEVEH Chair

The Nineveh Chair  was created within the institutional framework of the University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, which since its inception has been creating over the years Extraordinary Chair with a relevant role in the transmission of knowledge concerning a figure or important culture. On the other hand, it has also been a secular objective to offer its spaces to welcome other cultures and spread the knowledge of them.

Through research, seminars, debates, meetings with scholars, magistrates, journalists, artists, the Nineveh Chair will seek to promote knowledge of Assyria in its various socio-cultural and linguistic aspects. These activities will respond to a planning that will involve the various cultural, social and political institutions and associations present in the territory and will focus on current or historical issues.

The Nineveh Chair will promote joint research worldwide, focusing on Assyrian language, history and culture to create a critical mass that has not been systematically developed in the Western world so far.

Our Work Areas

Culture

Study of everything that can serve to deepen the knowledge of Assyrian people, in order to improve those topics that do not reflect the true and rich legacy of this great nation, today erased from the geo-political map.

Language and Literature

Assyrians, bilingual in Assyrian and Aramaic, excelled in a literary golden age surpassing Hebrew, Greek, and Latin in the late Middle Ages. The Nineveh Chair strives to introduce key Assyrian writers, translating ancient texts into English, French, German and Spanish for heightened modern awareness.

Art

The Nineveh Chair strives to bring the vast but overlooked Assyrian artistic heritage to the Western World through exhibitions spanning pre and post-Christian eras. Supported by a team of skilled Assyrian scholars, the Chair also embarks on studying and developing Assyrian music, contributing to the preservation of this rich cultural legacy.

Investigation

The Nineveh Chair, inspired by Helsinki's Assyrian center, aims for global research collaborations. Salamanca aspires to excel in modern Assyrian studies, correcting historical misconceptions, prioritizing funds for research on language, history and culture in order to create a critical mass previously lacked in the Western world.
